Churches, Chapels and Wayside ShrinesThe fields, hills and mountains around Völs are rich in cultural and religious heritage, manifest in the countless larger and smaller churches, chapels and delightfully crafted wayside shrines and crosses.Unser Liebe Frau Parish Church (Church of Our Lady) at Völs Village churches generally blend in beautifully with the townscape, but rarely as strikingly as in Völs, where the parish church rises from the highest point in the village centre. The church as we see it today was commissioned by Leonhard von Völs in 1515 and has since been housing the Baroque winged altar (today with neo-Gothic additions), crafted by Meister Narziß. Interesting features inside the church are the Rococo pulpit and the pipe organ, both dating from the 18th century. The oldest of the remaining church fittings is the Romanesque crucifix from around 1200. St. Michael ChapelThis chapel is particularly known for its magnificent frescoes. It also houses the Parish Museum where the collection of mobile sacred objects of art is on permanent display. Peterbühl Church The first documented mention of St. Peter am Bichl ("St Peter by the Hill") dates back to 1371. However, the church foundations are believed to be considerably older, from the 12th or the 13th century. In 1498 and 1507 it was modified, which added considerable alterations to the side porches. Following a devastating fire the spire was given a new roof in 1862. The most salient characteristics of the church are the round arch at the front porch, capped by a polygonal lintel, and a pointed-arch window. The winged altar in the church was made around 1510. St. Margareth Church at Obervöls This small Gothic church was erected at the end of the 15th century. The remains of the late-Gothic altar, the frescoes and wall paintings are of great interest. Guided tours every Friday at 10.00 am, July through October. St. Johann at Völser Aicha The church was first mentioned in 1250; however, the lower part of the spire and the round apse, which today is part of the sacristy, date back to the Romanesque era. During the restoration of the building in 1979 a fresco was discovered in the old apse, depicting the Majestas Domini surrounded by symbols of the Evangelists and two angels playing musical instruments. St. Katharina at Völser Aicha Of the first church building at this site, mentioned in 1293, only the walls of the nave and the lower part of the spire remain. Around 1500 the star vault was built and the slanted triumph arch was added to the building. The fresco on the southern outer wall is particularly remarkable, depicting scenes from the legend of Saint Catherine. Other Churches and Chapels: St. MichaelSt. Konstantin St. Martin at Ums St. Nikolaus at Prösels Kassianskapelle at the Schlern mountain Prösels Castle Chapel Chapel at St. Anton Numerous farmhouse chapels from the 17th and 18th centuries (Gemoanerhof, Kompatschhof, Guntschöllerhof, Pulserhof at Völser Aicha) Völs Parish MuseumIn the Völs parish museum in St. Michael Chapel on Kirchplatz square objects of sacral art from churches and chapels in the surrounding area are on display.
