Braies Valley

The Braies Valley extends between Monguelfo and Villabassa. It is embedded in the wonderful landscape of the Braies Dolomites. The Braies Valley is quite long and is divided into three fractions: Braies di Fuori (Outer Braies), Braies di Dentro (Inner Braies) and San Vito; the main village is called Ferrara. The first documents in which “Bracu” (a celtic term, which developed into the name Braies, meaning marsh and quagmire) was mentioned, date back to 965 and 974. The two natural beauties of this Valley are represented by the Piazza Plateau (2,000 m) and the renowned Lago di Braies Lake.

Villabassa

It is embedded in a vast and green basin of the Dolomites. Even 150 years ago, the village of Villabassa and the Upper Puster Valley were considered to be the pioneers of Tyrolean tourism. This development took place thanks to the hotelier Emmerentia Hellensteiner, born Hausbacher in St. Johann in Tyrol. The Tyrolean host women received a letter addressed to “Miss Emma in Europe” and this is the name she kept. She was the host of the Auila Nera Hotel – the then Hotel Emma – famous for its hospitality and superb gastronomic delights.
Villabassa still is as inviting and enchanting as it was at the time. A real oasis for mountain holidays at an ideal altitude (1,154 m): unspoilt nature, pure air, green fields, dense pine and larch forests.

Dobbiaco

The first testimonials of the origins of Dobbiaco date back to 827. The village was then called "Duplago" and was one of the autonomous parishes, which was established after the construction of the Benedictine convent in San Candido. Every year a music festival named “settimana mahleriana” (Mahler Week) takes place in honour of the renowned composer, who once described is stay in Dobbiaco as follows: " It is a splendid place, a place, which definitely heals body and soul…”

Sesto

The “Vallis Sexta”, as Sesto was called in the Middle Age, is renowned for its splendid and incomparable surroundings. The high peaks of the Dolomites, which set the scene for many alpine adventures, create both a majestic and theatrical scenery to the South, the famous sunny quadrant of Sesto. The Fiscalina Valley, one of the most beautiful valleys in the world, provides access to the realm of 3,000 m mountains. Mountains which consist of lime formations and which contrast with the rounded plateaus of the Carniche Alps to North-East.
Sexten - The village of the Three Peaks of Lavaredo
Thanks to its unique mountain scenery Sexten is one of the most famous holiday resorts in the summer as well as in the winter. Nowhere else the mountains are more fantastic and more impressive than in this resort. It is not a coincidence that it was in this place where the most famous mountaineers of Europe started their discovery of the Alps 200 years ago. Some legendary climbing routes were named after these pioneers. In addition to this, well-known artists like the architect Clemens Holzmeister and the painter Rudolf Stolz left their mark in the valley of Sexten, which is characterised by its rural life. Their traditional heritage of this life still influences the appearance of the village of Sexten.

S. Candido

When driving through the upper Puster Valley you reach San Candido, a touristic centre both, in winter and in summer time, a village of great importance and appreciated throughout the world. Being in the shade of splendid and constant snow covered-peaks, it provides a paradise for skiers. In summer time, excursionists can choose between easy walks and demanding excursions. San Candido and its fractions Versciaco and Prato alla Drava offer incomparable scenery with a great panoramic view of the Dolomites in both winter and in summer. San Candido is located at the Drava river, at the beginning of the Sesto Valley, the main starting point of the train line, which leads through the entire Puster Valley.
