The Parco Naturale Adamello-Brenta

The Parco Naturale Adamello-Brenta is situated in the western part of Trentino and includes the Adamello and the Brenta mountain groups which are separated from the Val Rendena and lie among Val di Non, Val di Sole and Giudicarie. The park is the largest Protected Area in Trentino and includes 39 Towns. The vegetation is extremely rich and varies according to the different height. For this reason the park houses woods, pastures, grasslands, rocky areas and glaciers. The park is also rich of water since it has more than 50 lakes and the Adamello glacier which is among the widest in Europe. The fauna is among the richest in the Alps since it includes all mountain species, among them the brown bear and the steinbock.

Saint Vigilio’s Church
Saint Vigilio’s Church was founded in 1362 and was enlarged later, in 1515. It has a rectangular plan with three naves, pointed arches and vaults held up by granite columns. The medieval facade is decorated with frescoes from different epochs: the most important and peculiar one, for the theme dealt with, is undoubtely the famous “Dance of Death” by Simone Baschenis. Between 1519 and 1539 two cycles of the Dance of Death were painted in Val Rendena: one on the exterior of Saint Stefano’s Church at Carisolo, the other on the south wall of Saint Vigilio’s Church at Pinzolo. Both frescoes were painted by Simone II Baschenis from Averaria, a painter from Bergamo, who lived between 1490 and 1555. He is considered to be the greatest and most famous painter among those called Baschenis, who decorated a lot of churches in Trentino between the mid-15th century and the mid-16th century. The fresco at Pinzolo occupies a frieze which is more than 2 metres high and more than 22 metres wide.
